wax fountain ...

"the whole world is a single flower". twenty five hundred years ago, buddha picked up a flower. nobody understood. three hundred years later, the sixth patriarch said, "originally there is nothing, where can you find dust ?"

a flower, also known as a bloom or blossom. the flower structure contains the plant's reproductive organs, and its function is to produce seeds through sexual reproduction.
many flowers are dependent upon the wind to move pollen between flowers of the same species. others rely on animals (especially insects) to accomplish this feat. flowers that are insect pollinated are called entomophilous (literally "insect loving"). pollinators are attracted to the plant, perhaps in search of nectar.
the plant in the picture is native to some tropical forests. known as ceropegia (from latin, meaning "wax fountain"). the flowers have a waxy appearance and they resemble small lantern/fountain, are characterised by tubular flowers specially adapted for the temporary capture of insects for pollination purposes.
on the inside of the tube, hairs are found, all of them directed downwards. when a pollinator enters the cage and moves down the tube, the stiff hairs make it difficult, if not impossible, to move out again. the insect is thus almost forced to move further down where a very specialized structure containing the pollen mass is housed. pollen sacks get attached to the bodies of the pollinators. after about four days, the flowers start to wilt. when this happens, the hairs become lax and the pollinator can leave its cage, pollination taking place when it enters another flower of the same species.
however, produces a large amount of seeds. the seeds are mainly wind-distributed and are dispersed by floating on the gentlest breeze with their parachute-like tufts of white hairs.

Wow, neat info. Suresh! 4 days of being stuck in that flower? I would totally panic if it was me. Such a beautiful photo!

Hope you have a lovely day and that you don't get accidentally trapped in some flower for pollinization purposes. :)

I thought only we humans read poetry and listen to music. The plants and animals my have their own way of entertaining themselves. they may have different kind of music, different literature, birds sitting on the branches making incoherant sounds may be like jazz to them. I thought the plant and animal world is concerned only with survival and procreation. It may not be so.

hey patty, the info makes the photo so much more worthwhile aint it ?

see, if being stuck in that flower was all that bad, the incsect wont being doing it over and over again. soon after the exit ... the insect searches for another similar flower to pollinate. there should be some great reward/experience inside the flower ... we need to be that insect to find that out exactly !
please come up with some explainations patty.

ha ha ha, thats a good piece of advice there. but hey, what if its really cool ? should i deny my experience over prejudice ? :)

cheers !

thanks for your comment. cheers !

hi chinna, thats interesting ! it could be the beginning of many things. wondered why these insects do it over and over again ? this flower could be the 'hell fire club' ???

ho rauf, you have touched the grand tip of the real world of the so called lesser life forms !!!

i keep wondering about this ingredient called fun and entertainment, which should be present in all life forms. because it makes the whole process of evolution a lot more lighter (an anti gravity mechanism ?) ... its a facinating study, soon will post some cool facts about this in the monkey world.

am so glad you are thinking about this rauf, now i can expect some insights from you into the world apart from survival and procreation ...

hi wendy,
thats a good idea, could be a picnic ! could be a spa ! could be an exotic 'soma' experience ! the flower might be brewing some exotic drink for the insect to do it over and over again ! ...

am sure its some cool experience ... atleast for once !

hope you feeling better ... take it easy ...

hello david kleinert,
it is quiet an unusual plant is'nt it, its not carnivorous and not a regular reward and courier service either. hope science would understand relationships better for all to see the delicate and complex workings of the inter- species evolution better.

I should have replied to your comment sooner.

I didn't know the insects did it over and over again. Very interesting. I don't know exactly what you mean by coming up with explainations, but here is my guess:

Like the insect being trapped for 4 days, we can be busy for 4 days, doing something for someone else and while doing so, we may enjoy not thinking about ourselves, but be happy about that person we are helping and not think of ourselves as being trapped, but think of these 4 days as a good experience. Even if we just spend 4 afternoons helping someone, giving up those 4 afternoons that we might have spent doing something for ourselves. We might enjoy it so much, that we do it again some time.

Don't know if that is what you meant for me to come up with.

Have a lovely day, Suresh!

hi rauf, my response does sound a bit unclear about what i expect from you, what i actually intended was that am never satisfied with the answer that only humans have all this great sense of humour, sensitivity, concept of entertainment etc. apart from pure survival.
but all life forms must have it in their own scale. you are someone who always looks at things beyond the face value and you do that with logic. so i was just inviting you to figure the many why's and why not's ... which needs more than plain logic and understanding.
its great fun to contemplate the meaning and the drives behind life. which you always focused on.
i hope this was what you pointed out.

take care rauf !

hi rob, at face value it does seem like taking a hostage but that cant be true if the insect does it for a living. there should be some great reward, which our science is yet to figure out.
my guess is that the flower is also a spa :) ...

cheers !

hi patty, yes the insect loves doing what its doing ... otherwise any relationship cant last for this long.

you are right, thats exactly what i was asking you. there should be similar reasons like what you mentioned, that makes both the parties feel good and there is a reward at either end. its not like people spending days in a library are hostages and its a miserable experience, or to say all social workers lead a sad life.

thanks for your views patty, you have a great day too ! :)

hi jeorge, understanding deeper meaning can come about thru knowing finer details. here passion is such a key ingredient to create or to understand meanings behind details ... but i dont understand passion ?

Passion is drive coming from within....perhaps like the involuntary muscles working in the human body...cheers !
