crawling star ...

the universe has been believed to exist in many weird and wonderful forms. one of them was the popular belief in the late nineteenth century, that there was no universe but the earth was a flat disc supported on the back of a giant tortoise. not just one tortoise, but an infinite tower of tortoises, each standing on the back of another.

at this point in time no one really knows how much matter exists in the entire universe nor the exact status of this endangered species, geochelone elegans. also known as a crawling star.
"the indian star tortoise" is a land-dwelling reptile. found in dry areas and scrub forest of india and sri lanka. omnivorous, but inclined to be vegetarian. feeds on succulent, fallen fruits, grass, fungi etc. they are also known to feed on snails, animal and bird excreta.
tortoises generally have a lifespan comparable with that of human beings. it is now considered an endangered species due to over poaching for the pet market.

Aha!, I knew it. If we take away all the tortoises, the universe will collapse into a big black hole. ;-)

atlas was punished by zeus for some silly crime, holding the world on his shoulder. Hercules fell in love with some goddess and he was asked to bring 3 golden roses from some garden, but he had to fight a what ? a demon, which was beyond his skills, so hercules goes to Atlas who is pissed with holding the world on his shoulders. Can you help me Ok brother hold this world for a while. The world is transfered to Hercules. Atlas fights the demons and brings 3 golden roses. Hey man I got what you wanted but I am going on a holiday, keep holding the world. Atlas tries to act smart. Now hercules says hey man I want to scratch my back can you hold the world for a sec. What ? why can't you scratch your back with one hand which is free. While doing so i might drop this world. please just for a second, you are a sweetie. vokkay just for a second, no more. the world is transferred back to Atlas.
EEEEYAA ! I am off what a dumb ass you are Atlas, bye bye !

hello george, many times, this whole pet thing is taken to extreme desires for ownership and control over nature. it simply shows our weakness and definition of love.

rauf, thats a good story. the moral of the story would be "dont trust someone who wants to scratch his back with both hands" ...

kathy, thank you, am glad you enjoyed it. what is 'dark matter'? is a very interesting question, for the past 70 years, the problem of black matter has been one of the major questions in astrophysics. luminous matter is the only matter that we can detect by observation which is 1%. we still do not know what makes up 99 % of our universe which is made up of black matter/non-luminous matter ! lots of theories are coming up but nothing satisfactory. interesting isnt it kathy ?

jill, what you are saying holds true everywhere. we not only disturb them, we take them home as pets, build super structures on its nesting site, kill huge numbers while fishing etc etc etc. one thing is for sure ... since some 200 million years of its existence, only now they have a true enemy, posing for its extinction.

hayden, these are pretty much found only in and just around the indian subcontinent. the biggest threat to its survival is its exotic markings, crazy pet owners want to show off.

being gorgeous and desirable is not so great for the non-human species ! exotic pet trade is a few billion dollars industry !
